There are always survivors. Even if you destroy a planet there are inhabitants somewhere in your own galaxy. They get in touch with each other, they bring new technologies, they form alliances and they come back and attack…

It went on for hundreds of years in the War of the Three Stars, which had finished only recently.

For a time it seemed as if the tyrannical planet known as Black Star had been defeated forever. In one of the many alliances formed at that time, the sons of the Yellow Star Dion joined forces with the inhabitants of the Red Star Xaga and launched a joint attack on the Black Star. They destroyed the city of Blakea, capital of the Black Star Federation, and turned most of the planet into lifeless areas of burnt rock.

But the defeat was more apparent than real. The Black Star Federation had learnt from previous defeats. It had diversified its power base, improved its communication systems and formed distant alliances that gave it access to new technology. The inhabitants of the Black Star soon regrouped in the First Asteroid Belt under the supervision of imported engineers. The engineers devised a way of counter-attacking by using large numbers of asteroids as missiles in simultaneous attacks. Xaga and Dion had no way of defending themselves against so many asteroids...

The Black Star Federation showed no mercy. It occupied the Red and Yellow stars and sent the Queen Mother of Xaga into exile, condemning her to drift away into deep space. Xaga itself, capital of the Red Star Foundation, was sacked and destroyed.

Xagian people were forced into labor by Black Imperial command. Some of them were assigned to administrative roles in the offices of Black Star officials, both military and civilian.

The Emperor Ancliones decided to rebuild the capital, Blakea, on what was left of the planet. The Black Star was little more than a large asteroid after so many years of war, but for sentimental reasons he built his Imperial Palace on it, together with hangars and runways. This drifting mass of burnt rock and metal became the centre of a new Black Galactic Empire... Blakea and the whole asteroid belt became a stepping stone for the expansion of imperial tyranny. He renamed the asteroid belt The Ringstone, and The Ringstone belt itself became controllable in speed and direction. Imperial expansion was guaranteed.

In time the Black Planet and the administration of the empire needed more workers, and laborers were imported from the Red and Yellow planets. Some were sent to administer other worlds, but many were imported to Blakea.

Nobody trusted them but everybody needed them. Security was high…
The victory of the Black Foundation was due largely to one man, Captain Helmek Varkonem. Varkonem was a Space Corsaire, a mercenary pilot at the service of the Black Empire in its war against Xaga and Dion. He had risen quickly to the rank of Captain, and had led the attacks on the rival planets of Xaga and Rigula and eliminated their armies.

The aged Emperor felt that the young Captain was in some obscure, unknown way, important in the fate of the Black Foundation. He named him Governor of Outer Ringstone and gave him command of the main module of the Imperial megacraft, now known as New Black Star. In this role he was also responsible for the safety of the Emperor and his court.

And so it happened one day, through chance or destiny, that Captain Helmek Varkonem renewed an earlier, secret relationship with the lovely Empress Shaliba, the octogenarian Emperor’s latest wife. Shaliba was a strong, physical woman who found court life monotonous.

Their relationship began again almost immediately after Captain Helmek Varkonem took command of the megacraft.

The Empress was subject to rigorous security measures, but with the help of her domestic staff she found ways of leaving the palace and visiting the command centre. She always went with one of her attendants and she was always careful to return quickly to the palace. It was a dangerous thing to do. She was not sure if the Captain would want to renew their relationship, and she was afraid of her husband’s reaction if she was discovered…

However, on one occasion she decided to go alone. She was tired of endlessly daydreaming and thinking about the young Captain. She dressed in staff clothes and gained access through the staff section of the command centre. She was caught and detained by a guard.

“Xagian intruder!” said the guard. “This is a no-go zone. I’m taking you to the Sergeant!”
“I’m not Xagian,” she replied. “I’m... I’m the Empress’s chambermaid. She has sent me with a message for Captain Varkonem.”
“You’ll meet my Sergeant first,” said the guard. “Where’s the message? Hidden somewhere, I suppose?”
“What’s the problem?” Varkonem asked, opening a door.
“A Xagian spy, Captain! I caught the intruder in Corridor Z.”
“I have a message from my mistress the Empress,” said the Empress. “It is for your ears only, Captain. It is very important.”
“She’s Xagian, Captain.”
“I can see that. She won’t cause trouble though. I’ll see her in my office,” said Varkonem.

“That was very foolish of the Empress to send you,” said Varkonem, smiling. “You could have been interrogated. It would not have been pleasant. What’s the message?”
“My mistress would like to meet you in person. Privately. Intimately.”
Varkonem smiled again.

“The other day we caught a Dionian trying to break into the Palace communication system. One cannot be too careful. Xagian women have been known to use their athletic builds and their presence to gain access to Black Star Federation officials. What surprises me a little is that an Empress should dress up in Xagian clothes and do me the honor of visiting me personally.”
The Empress Shaliba smiled.
The captain bowed slightly. “Technically, you are in command, Shaliba,” he said. “Which means that I obey your orders. In practice, you will find that you obey mine.”
“I was not sure if you remembered me. You have not changed much,” she said. “A little older, a little more... interesting.”
“I remember everything very well.” Varkonem said.

“There was nothing to remember,” replied Shaliba. “You never embraced me. I wanted you to, but you never did.”

“Well, let’s say I came very near. But it would all have been too dangerous for me then. Things are different now. I am responsible to no one, except perhaps your husband. By the way, I imagine you do not know this, but it was me who arranged for you to be presented to the Emperor. It seems your graceful figure had a powerful effect on him. There are times when weak gravity is a distinct advantage.”

The Empress Shaliba bit her lip. “No, I did not know this,” she said. “I am not sure I should thank you. I am bored out of my mind as the wife of that old fool. Being Empress is not as amusing as I supposed.”

She walked slowly across the room towards Varkonem. He fixed his eyes unashamedly on her elegant form, which moved in an irresistible slow grace as if it had a life of its own. She paused in front of him and lifted her face to him. “I think you owe me something for all the boredom you have caused me,” she said, smiling. “I think you should serve me. My husband never does.”

Varkonem looked at her. She was beautiful. He himself was from another spacial zone, but that did not matter much. There had been so many migrations, and so much colonization and voluntary partnerships, that most of the genes ended up back in the same gene pool and everybody was a hybrid of some kind. It did not matter much where the women were from. All the men admired them when they saw them.

Varkonem turned the Empress round and pressed himself against her. He ran his fingers lightly over her shoulders and she stretched out her fingers and placed her hand on his thigh...

“Are you wearing regulation Xagian dress?” he asked. “Yes,” she replied, pulling away from him and taking off her dress. She was modestly attired underneath the dress. That had been one of the Emperor’s first decrees for captured Xagian women…

He gazed in fascination at her firm form and well-rounded features, which had adjusted slightly in her aroused state…

She took his hand and grasped it. “I will serve you and you will serve me,” she said. “I am ready for you. I will be ready for you every day until the old fool dies.”

She embraced him again, and then lifted her strong thigh for him to hold her.

From that day on they met as often as they could...
As time passed, they grew less cautious about their meetings, which sometimes took place in the privacy of the Empress’s chambers. One night, when the Imperial Megacraft was flying over the Ganimia quadrant, the old Emperor felt a rare surge of affection and entered his wife’s bedchamber. He found his wife and the young Captain in a private moment, engaged in quiet conversation.

“Traitors! Both of you!” he shouted. “Deceivers! A conspirator and a mercenary, you make a fine pair of betrayers! We’ll see how you scheme after this!”

Helmek Varkonem picked up a communication device and held it toward the Emperor. For a moment, he hesitated, aware that he was confronting the Master of the Galaxy, the leader who had overseen the transformation of the planets Xaga and Dion and the builder of Ringstone.

Chance or destiny had placed the most powerful man in the galaxy in his hands... It was now or never.

“Speak! Challenge your Emperor, if you dare!” the Emperor shouted.

“My Lord!” said the Empress. “The Captain is pressuring me! Help me!”

“Guards!” shouted the Emperor. “Guards! Guards!”

“I am head of the guards,” said Varkonem, and activated the device, sending a signal that caused the Emperor to collapse, unconscious.

Varkonem acted swiftly. He stepped away from the Empress, activated the device again to emit a warning signal, and then used it to disable a nearby window’s security system, causing it to malfunction. He discarded the device outside the window into the garden. He surveyed the room. Yes, it looked plausible. An intruder could have tampered with the window’s system easily enough, he thought. From there, they could access the exterior modules. With an antigrav suit, they could be anywhere now, though they would not be able to leave the megacraft.

When the guards burst in, they found the Captain partially dressed, calmly adjusting his shirt. The guards looked at him in astonishment. They saw the Emperor lying unconscious, with faint traces of the signal’s energy lingering.

Shaliba was sitting up now, trembling. She picked up her dress and quickly covered herself.
