Dr. Edmund Harrow is a British archaeologist with a taste for lost tombs and a worse one for the women who work beside them. In 1935 he takes charge of a dig in the Valley of the Kings — thirteen years after

Tutankhamun — and treats the isolated camp as his private ground. By day he maps shafts and raises the flag. By night he studies habits, tents, and the gold shackles he lifted from a burial chamber. 

He is patient, methodical, and certain no one will stop him. Hands that should hold a trowel wander first. Then come the restraints, the gags, the visits after dark. Harrow did not come to Egypt only to find the dead. He came to use the living — and he keeps a list.
