Evelyn Shaw is an expedition photographer — blonde, blue-eyed, and always within reach of her camera. Sent to the Valley of the Kings in 1935 to document a British dig, she treats the desert as work: tents, negatives, inscriptions on stone, the next shot before the light dies. She keeps two tents, one to sleep in and one to develop film, and she prefers the darkroom to dinner invitations.

She notices when men look too long. She hears things at night she was never meant to hear. She finds a broken dagger in the sand and starts keeping it close. Evelyn came to Egypt for the tombs. What she finds instead is how quickly an isolated camp can turn a working woman into prey — and how hard she intends to fight that.
